String intern table keep weak references to its objects, so unused strings can be collected as garbage when no other references exist except from intern table itself.

Could you please give a reference to this fact?

I checked jdk7 native sources but looks like sun.jvm.hotspot.memory.StringTable extends sun.jvm.hotspot.utilities.Hashtable holds strong references.

Then, I've found several Lucene JIRAs where they move out form String.intern() due to its' low performance - native code breaks JIT substitutions, I guess.
